Help! Building an electric motorcycle but I don’t know anything about electricity?

Hi,

I’m a sophomore mechanical engineering student and I’ve decided to build an electric motorcycle for fun and to get an idea of where the industry for electric vehicles is at. I haven’t started on my actual engineering courses yet (just a lot of calc and chem.), but I’d like to move forward on the project anyways.

I haven’t had a lot of time to look into exactly what goes into a electric vehicle like this (beyond the obvious: batteries, electric motor, frame), so at this point I’m trying to put together a diagram of what I need and how these components are connected to each other.

If you can put together a diagram in text that would be great! But any advice you might have would be appreciated immensely too.

How to turn a motor into a generator and use it to charge a car battery?

I am planning to build an electric vehicle and I would like to have regenerative brakes to increase its travel range.

Some people say that a motor and a generator are basically the same thing.

But how come a car alternator doesn’t turn on its own even when it’s connected to a car battery?

I plan to power the electric motor with four 12volt batteries connected in series to make a total of 48volts.

What should I do to be able to instantly convert the motor into a generator (to convert kinetic into electrical energy and charge
the batteries) as the vehicle is in motion?

is there a need for some complicated circuit boards to do this?

if I were able to switch the positive and negative connections to the motor as the vehicle is moving then would it charge the batteries?

If I converted an old Honda into an electric car, how exactly do I register it legally with the DMV?

I live in California and I created my own electric conversion vehicle. How do I register it legally with the California DMV? I tried looking through their site but either they don’t have instructions for me, or it’s too confusing/evasive for me to find. Last I heard, there were also extra steps I had to take to prepare my vehicle for inspection (although I have no idea from who, or where), and that only a 100 vehicles will be granted registration, on January 1st of every year. That sounds a little extreme to me.

I’m good with mechanics, but not good with applications/ paperwork/ legal issues at all. Help! I want to be able to drive my car on the streets.

Does anyone know anything that might be useful? Point me in the right direction? I know I could go to the local DMV, but I don’t even know who to ask there.
