I am thinking about an electric vehicle conversion. I want to remove the transmission, as the rotation of the motor is enough. Here comes the problem though: how do I reverse? It will be a variable frequency drive, and I am planning on mounting it directly on the axle (well like where the bar that connects the axle with the transmission used to be.
Also would the rotation of the motor be enough or will I need to add some permanent gears?

A rear differential has about a 3:1 drive ratio. It would basically be like the highest gear in the transmission all the time.
You actually can do that with electric, but acceleration would be slower.
For reverse, just use a controller that has a reverse function.
